Five Tips to Make Summer a Little Easier

It can be easy to dread summer, especially if your kids have been kept busy in school for 9 months out of the year. I’d like to share a few tips that have helped me and will hopefully make your summer a little easier.

Pack it up!

Keep a bag in your car with extra swimsuits, clothes, towels, diapers…anything you would need for an impromptu trip to a splash pad, pool or park. This way, you can make an unscheduled stop whenever you’re out and about, without having to go home and pack up. (I have 3 small children. I know how hard it is to unload and load everyone in the car.)

Stay hydrated

Try to keep water bottles filled up and in the fridge for when you want to (or desperately need to) get out of the house quickly. It makes it really easy to have everyone grab some water so you don’t have to make a stop for kids who are “dying” of thirst.

Know your local splash pads

Pools are fantastic, and one day when all my kids swim well, I’m sure we will spend a lot more time at pools. However, for the time being, none of my kids swim well and taking 3 children to a pool on my own is stressful. Splash pads are my favorites because my kids can get soaking wet, and I don’t have to be within arms reach of them at all time. Laundry on repeat

With all the splash pad fun, you may feel inundated with constant laundry (but what else is new, right?) I’ve found that the easiest thing for me is to toss all the laundry in at the end of the day. As soon they get out of their wet stuff, throw it all in the washer. When it’s all done, you can easily put it back in the bag in the car, or wherever it came from. This way you’re only doing one smallish load instead of ten huge loads.

Feed the (endless) little bellies

If your kids are anything like mine, they’re perpetually hungry. I jest…but not really. We try (key word try) to eat healthy, balanced meals in our house, but it’s hard to do that when it feels like they’re eating all the time. It’s easier to throw (not literally, you guys) easy snacks at them so I’m not in the kitchen 24/7.

Lately I’ve been trying to keep ready-made stuff in the fridge so I can quickly hand out food. Some of the current favorites in our house include Cowboy Caviar and a variety of beans and rice “salads” (except we don’t call them salads in our house because…kids.) Pasta salad full of cheese and veggies would be another great option.
